Hello Herbie's Human,

To access the trail system on the north end of Willow Lake take Willow Creek Rd. to Heritage Park Rd. There's a traffic signal at this intersection. Go east, then take the immediate next right, go past the Zoo entrance to either the first parking lot on your right, or follow the road up and over the hill to a parking lot just north of the boat dock. The trail head is on the east side of the parking lot (on the left when driving into the lot) and is marked fairly well.

I prefer to park at the lot just past the zoo for the extra bit of exercise it affords, regardless of which direction I decide to travel in. It's about 3/8's of a mile from there to the "Approach Trail Head". Have fun out there and post your comments when you get back. Oh yes, mosquitoes might be bothersome if you're the type they favor, as I tend to be.

Hey there Herbie Dog and Herbie's Hiking Human!

Thanks for stopping in at the blog again. I appreciate your comments about the School House Gulch Trails. One of the nicest areas close in that Trail Pooches can visit. You're every bit correct with your description of these fine trails and to see that you ran into other trail pooches is encouraging to Wicket and me.

Just wondering if you and Herbie were able to discuss the rebuilding of the rock and log bench at "poetry point" with any of the teams you met along the way? I suppose with enough Trail Pooch teams lending a hand, it might well get done fairly fast. I'm still up for the project when there are few more backs to carry the heavy stuff! Could make for a lot of fun and definitely could have a chance of bringing a few poets out for a recital some day to that special spot. That might be great fun too. "Poetry in the Ponderosas"

I got to tell you the humidity has been at border line Florida levels around here for sure, but I do like hiking in a wet forest!

On July 27, Herbie Dog and I were hiking our usual Trail 67 out of White Spar Campground and then on to Trail 61 when we met another trail pooch - a 'teacup Yorkie'. Well, that was a surprise because it is such a tiny dog, but it was marching right along.

The following day we met Sadie, a Borsai/Greyhound mixand her human. Herbie and Sadie played like overgrown kids.

This morning we hiked over to 396 by the pool. Herbie couldn't resist wading in. It was so humid I thought I was back in Florida, but also it was so green. We saw clumps of bergamot, phlox, queen ann's lace, goldenrod, and many other wildflowers. Beautiful.

What an unexpected pleasure to sniff Wicket on trail 61 this morning, oh, and you too Noel. I especially enjoyed dogging around with Wicket. My human is partial to Trails 67/61/396 to a place she has dubbed, 'Poetry Point', a lookout spot off 396 with a westerly view of Quartz Hill,and Thumb Butte. It used to have a circle of rocks with log seats but someone seems to have decided to build a monument to their religion or a departed loved one. The log seats are gone. My human would like to meet up with some other hikers and spend a bit of time replacing the rock and log seats. It appears there are plenty of materials within a few yards of the spot but she can't lift those logs or move some nice sized rocks into place by herself and I'm more interested in fetching sticks. Anyone interested in meeting up? Looking forward to sniffing you on the trail, Herbie Dog (And don't forget: Dogs are the gods of frolic.)
